Message from Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO)
The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) provided the following update on ongoing construction work in the French Quarter. Our office is helping to amplify this information to keep residents and businesses informed.
Emergency Hydrant Valve Removal
On Thursday, August 28, 2025, SWBNO conducted an emergency closure to remove an existing fire hydrant valve that was in conflict with the new drain line. This work was necessary to:
-
Maintain fire service in the area during construction
-
Address a hydrant that had been leaking for an extended time due to the faulty valve
-
Support the efficiency and reliability of the overall system
The drain line on the west side of St. Peter (Tableau side) is nearing completion and is expected to be finished next week, weather permitting.
Utility Conflicts at St. Peter & Royal
SWBNO is also coordinating with Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric to resolve conflicts with an older Entergy gas manhole and surrounding power lines. Entergy crews have been on site working with the project team to keep the process efficient and safe.
Work on Decatur Street
Delta Utilities is continuing work along the 900 and 1000 blocks of Decatur Street:
-
The 900 block is scheduled for completion before the 1000 block.
-
Both blocks remain on schedule for early October completion.
-
Once Delta Utilities finishes, SWBNO contractors will begin replacing water, sewer, and drain lines. This phase will include security fencing and lighting, similar to what is in place along the 600 block of St. Peter.
Looking Ahead
-
SWBNO acknowledges the inconvenience caused by this construction and appreciates the community’s patience.
-
The project team remains committed to keeping residents and businesses updated throughout the process.
-
While SWBNO offices will be closed for the holiday on Friday and Monday, contractors will continue working on Friday and Saturday to maintain progress.
